staggered doesn't improve grip. infact stagger is used to induce "understeer" it's a cheap way of making the car understeer, this is one reason why car makers started doing this on "sports cars"

you're better off starting with stock wheels and some cheap tires. that way you will learn a whole lot more. stickier/wider tires hide a lot of mistakes that the driver makes, stock tires for the most part will show every mistake you make.
