Well if you are going to lower your ride with a "coilover" then you need a shock that has a shorter stroke than stock. If you were to use a stock size stroke then it wuld "bottom out" which causes premature failure of the strut and lessens the dampening ability of the strut.
the easiest way to explain it is that I am sure you have seen cars on chopped springs and how they have that bounce to them? well that is because they are lowered on stock struts and the rod is at the end of it's stroke so it constantly is bouncing off the high compression end of it's run. Makes for poor handling all around and a poor ride.
