Some batteries need water to replenish the electrolytes? Not sure exactly why, but some batteries have covers where you put water in. I guess you haven't serviced cars too long, huh? Good thing you see more of these "maintenance-free" batteries with the color indicator. On the older batteries, you literally had to pop the covers off of the battery and check if enough water's in there.
