+ They reduce engine wear
+ They're resistant to oil sludge
- They might not coat seals as well as regular oil.
Synthetic oil is something you do for life. There is no switching in and out when there's a sale. If you switch back and forth, you'll develop leaks due to rotting seals.
Is your neighbor a mechanic? I wouldn't take car advice from some schlub that lives next door.
