If you think it jumped a tooth, set the crank to TDC, loosen the timing belt tensioner, set the cam gear(s) to TDC, put the belt back on, and tighten it down. Then you can rotate the crank without worrying about piston/valve slap, although I'm not sure you would even need to worry about it witht he belt off. Assuming your t-belt didn't jump a tooth, the grinding sound might just be localized in the starter, or between the starter and the flywheel.
