don't forget that JVC allowed other companies to manufacture VHS players and recorders, while beta was sony-only. if you were to go the beta route you only had one option, and no competiton to drive prices or features other than the VHS market.

the sony hate is ridiculous
two of the major backers of Blu ray are dell and apple. their decisions are considered paramount to the success of the format (imagine if every dell and apple computer came packaged with blu-ray in the future...)

after the laptop battery fiasco these companies are going to be looking in other directions, HP, another member of the blu-ray association has already started shipping HD-DVD drives with it's computers, something which many other companies might start to do just because of sony's strong ties to Blu-Ray
