If you want to rip your own HD-DVD's, you can attempt to download a 25gb file off of a torrent. Otherwise, you kinda do need to buy the 360 kit at the bare minimum and locate hacked drivers.

I'm guessing he was using a DVI connection to a PC monitor that wasn't "HDCP" compatable.
