You should be also able to get what is called a mechanic's lien (basically an instrument that you've done work on the car but never got paid for it and the DMV can get title to you through a simple process) but I've never done this before.
I bought my track car with no title - really don't care much as it is not street driven and the car isn't worth much overall.
