Default How do I buy a car with no title

I was just wondering how can you buy a car if the owner claims that he has lost the title to it? I kind of find it sketchy but then I again I meet a lot of stupid people at my work so I wouldnt be suprised if he actually did. I just dont want it to turn out that the car was stolen and that it will show up on title?

He can get a duplicate copy of his title from the DMV.

Ok thanks. Does it take long for the title to get to him once he goes to the DMV to request a new one?

This might be my first time buying a car on my own. So if I end up buying it I need a title and bill of sale, right?

for the sale you need a title, mutually signed by both parties as an agreement of sale and a bill of sale, preferrably notarized.

no title throws up some red flags. if he can't produce a title i'd look for another car elsewhere. That is unless, of course, that he is still making payments, in which case the finance company or bank holds the title. I'd make sure of it first before any cash traded hands though.

He says that he lost the title but had the dmv give him some paperwork to fill out to get a new title. He told me he never filled it out I think??? I couldn't quite understand what he was telling me. He also told me that they have the title marked as lost at the dmv when he requested the papers for a new title. He said that I will need to fill them out myself because he does not want to deal with it. Can I purchase the car with those papers that the dmv has given him or do I need an actual title?

You should be also able to get what is called a mechanic's lien (basically an instrument that you've done work on the car but never got paid for it and the DMV can get title to you through a simple process) but I've never done this before.

I bought my track car with no title - really don't care much as it is not street driven and the car isn't worth much overall.

Yeah, without the title I can almost guarantee that you are going to have an assload of bureaucratic problems trying to register the car.
