That's interesting when I look at the Helms diagram on the PCV system, it shows fresh air being drawn from the intake arm.
It is only drawn from the intake arm because there is a vacuum source present on the other side of the PCV valve. Since there is no longer a vacuum source on my setup, the nipple on the valve cover is still venting PCV gases just like a gutted PCV valve would.

Yes. As long as there is a place for the gases to escape (in your case, the breather on top of the can, you will be fine.
