weird...

it looks..like maybe something got stuck between the axle and alt. mount or he bent the axle big time and the axle was cut and rewelded, which might mean the axle isn't setting all the way in the tranny. however if the axle was bent that far it would have pulled out of the hub and there would also be damage on the control arm..

hell it might be something simple like he didn't get the correct shaft length and moved the car some distance and left the axle rubbing against the bracket.

if the guy doesn't want to say something about it he probably did something stupid.
