their reason was to bring the cost down, and that everyone has a DVD player already. the last bit is probably true, whether it's a standalone DVD player or computer... but the Wii can already
read DVD discs, meaning it has the hardware. how much would it have cost to include DVD video playback?
I used my PS2 as a DVD player. we didn't buy a stand alone dvd player until the ps2 broke.
It was easier to use 1 player instead of 2, especially if the tv only has 1 set of A/V jacks.
