sorry about the late response on the polishing plastic......what you are thinking of is what is referred to as "satin finish" yes if you take sand paper to a plastic piece (or even metal) you will see lines. the trick is to get really fine sand paper (higher the grit the better) and then use a polishing cloth or buffing wheel to bring out the shine.
