Dude carburated cars haven't been made in 15 years. Why in the world did you replace the fuel pressure regulator

That's something that very rarely goes and is very easily to troubleshoot if it does. Stop talking to your "mechanic" :eh:
Replace the spark plugs/wires/cap/rotor, clean the EGR port, check/replace the IACV. Do this in order of ascending cost. Hopefully one of those is the culprit, or it's a combination of those.
