I have a hose nozzle attachment I like to call the elephant trunk, it's a piece of rubber tubing - with a small bead inside - that can be bent to control the flow of water. I think ACE hardware sells them. Griot's Garage use to sell them but no longer it would appear.
I don't cover anything, I just direct light streams of water where need be and scrub with a tooth brush as needed. And quick detailer as needed. Then don't ever drive your car in the rain and stuff stays clean
