i expect costs to be over $3000 since so much of it is new and custom, and you will be dealing with reliability issues initially.
with lots of machine work (balancing and head porting/polishing) im sure an F23 could run even or better than an h22 when it comes to peak power...but I dont think that it will have as even a power band and will tend to be very peaky...though less so than a non vtec engine.
when i did all my research i was looking at:
$700+ for a new cam
unknown cost for valve retainers and springs to be able to use the cam to its full extent.
$700 for rods
$500 for custom compression ration pistons.
$1200+ for head machine work and assembly, also included port matching on the intake side.
then add in the little things like balancing it all, and bearings, and gaskets etc...
i also figured a lightweight flywheel ($300+), header ($300 more), larger injectors ($350+), and other little things (adj fpr and so on, at least another few hundred)
plus the assembly of the engine...i can drop it in jsut fine and go....but getting it together i dont trust that i have the skill to do it all perfect. anyway the cost i figured i needed to aim for was about $5000 to do it right....
