Component strength.

When combined with a strut design that has a large-diameter piston, an inverted strut can generally tolerate greater bending loads than a convential strut setup.

It's a bit of a stretch for a road-biased car like the Legacy, but the design was first used in the latter years of the Group B Rally Competition.
