the late gen escorts are mazdas (engine and tranny) so they are actually reliable
you've got 8k and that is a lot - you can get a nice used honda or toyota for that change and they won't have to have high mileage
getting a neon even new is a mistake - there's a reason why their sales have continually dropped and they are only sold mainly to fleets where they are wholesaled off after they are abused
