Incorrect. Higher octane fuel alone will NOT cause your engine to run/burn hotter. People say this, but they're wrong. It's the higher compression ratio that makes the burn hotter. The higher octane levels are necessary on these engines to prevent pinging, but only because they have a high compression ratio. Accord engines have LOW compression ratios that simply DO NOT require high octane fuel.

Okay, if you have pinging in your engine in the summer and have to use higher octane fuel, that's because there is something WRONG with your engine. Such as carbon deposits and hot spots. This can happen in older engines and in fact cause you to have to use higher octane fuel even if the engine was designed for a lower octane. But then using a higher octane fuel just sweeps the problem under the rug. The REAL problem is still there, which is deposit build-up in your engine.

There is a good argument that using high octane fuel in an engine not designed for it can lead to deposit build ups. Higher octane fuel is more difficult to burn and requires a higher compression ratio / hotter combustion temps to burn efficiently. So if you put premium in a LOW compression engine like an Accord, there's a chance that you are HARMING the engine with the higher octane fuel that isn't burning as completely as it should. Of course, the damage wouldn't show up for a VERY long time, but there is a chance you are in fact doing damage to the engine.
