That's normal. It's because you're making your power steering pump, which is belt driven, do more work...you can hopefully imagine what the engine needs to do to compensate.
Please explain to me what this POWER STEERING RACK & PINION thing is you've been referring to via a diagram or explanation, I'm just confused now.
