You could bring it to Auto Zone and they can plug it in, If the light is burnt out they should still be able to get a code. I had the same problem, only it didn't happen as often,They first replaced the EGR Valve but that didn't do much, Turns out it was The EGR Valve ports where clogged, just need to be cleaned, ran $200 at my Dealership, but my Check Engine light was on.
