I hear that when you change your filter, the few seconds it takes for the air to leave it and the oil to fill it is as bad for your engine as several hundred miles of driving. I don't know how true that is, but I am confident now that with modern engines and modern oils, 5k is a better interval, and changing sooner doesn't help at all. If you run synthetic, 7k-10k is better. Every 3k is good for the oil manufacturers, and is good for the old 60s Fords 'n schit that the interval was invented for.
