Well, I had the right-rear get noisy. The way the noise echoed around it wasn't real easy to hear which side it was coming from. And it didn't change in turns (that's usually a good test). I took off the wheels & checked, & you're sorta right, it didn't feel very 'gritty'. But it was pretty clear which side was bad.
