I personally would like reduce the amount of assistance, but I wouldn't want to eliminate it entirely. If there was a way to under-drive the pump and give the steering a bit more feel, I'd be all over it.

My old GTi weighed about as much as a DC4 and it didn't have power steering.
While the feedback through the wheel was great at speed, parallel parking was a pain. h:

From the standpoint of straight-line speed...yes, the power steering system uses engine power at all times. Removing the pump, fluid and lines will return more power to the wheels (although not much) and it will cut weight by a bit.

Heck, if you really wanted to, you could probably retrofit a manual steering rack from a base EG Civic. :dunno:
