6 pounds is safe, 10-12 psi track boost is safe with good tuning.
As for what turbo... you need to figure out what kinda horsepower you want for anyone to make suggestions, and what kinda internals you are going to be doing.
I am doing a CR/VTEC setup, and running a SC61 turbo. I don't suggest the SC61 unless your motor has the displacement/c.r to spool it, if not itll spool way high and be useless
For something with small amounts of boost and not too high HP numbers, like what it sounds like your doing, I suggest a T3/T4 hybrid or T04E or something around those lines
