After further reading, I think it might make more sense for me to just get a metric tap and dies, and put the threads on it. I don't suppose you know if I buy a boot it comes with that plastic clip that connects to the knob.

Is there any "real" advantage to having a shorter shift knob why is it popular to cut them down? I would think a longer shaft would give the driver more leverage to shift with less muscle.
