In most cases (95% of the courses) you leave it in 2nd. Also in most cases downshifting to 1st and back to 2nd you will loose time. Also some people loose their rhthym by shifting gears because you upset the balance of the car in doing so killing/wasting more time.
There was one event last year that was all 1st gear. And that was a Corvette event believe it or not. I tried shifting to 2nd but it was all u-turns and had no power coming out of the corners. IN 1st I hit redline a couple times on course but was 4 seconds faster leaving it in 1st. I was also the fastest car in the morning by about 5 seconds
My 2000 Honda Civic Si's tranny and engine are just like the rolled off the showroom floor sans short shifter and bolt ons.
