AVG is free (at least the free version is) and has just as much protection as any other virus program out there.

And Linux, heh. Out of the 50 or so known virus for Linux, NONE of them can do any amount of damage to the OS unless the root account doesn't have a password. Any Linux admin is smart enough to have a root password.
