best way to measure gas mileage (while not entirely accurate, but pretty close), is to drive till the tank is empty, fill it up and drive till it is empty again, then divide the number of miles by how much fuel you have to put back in it to make it "full" again. The "E" light comes on, on accord's with either 1.5 or 2 gallons remaining in the tank.
