IF you had a lot of blow by from the rings, you would be getting gasoline mixed with the oil and would have previously been burning a lot of oil. Rings typically fail slowly, not all of the sudden.

I think it's a seal in the tope end. The valve seats could be bad, but the spark plug seal is the most likely.
