Default replacing wheel studs

i need to replace one of the (front) wheel studs on my ek. i thought this would be a relativly easy r & r procedure; remove wheel, caliper, rotor, hub, stud, then press in new stud. anyways, i have heard from a number of people that to get to the back of the hub the ball joint needs to be removed, as well as the tie-rods, and some other stuff that i can't remember at this time. i can't visualize why this is necessary, (but i'm not doubting that it needs to be done) so is there any diy on wheel studs around?

oh yeah, i tried to download the service manuals on the online resources sticky, and the estimated time of download was like 19+ hours, (and i'm on a cable connection) so yeah, can any one help out?
