Dealers write up a buyer's order and request a car with a particular option package. Toyota builds the car at some point and ships it to the dealer. Aside from a refundable $500 deposit, no money changes hands until the car is delivered to the customer. The car isn't counted as sold until delivery.
Besides, your point is moot if you're talking about 2003. Because for the first 8 months of 2004, Toyota sold (i.e. the car was paid for by and delivered to a customer) 31,406 Priuses.
