Toyota will import 100,000 Prius hybrid cars to the United States in 2005, double the amount it expects to sell this year, the automaker said Thursday.

Through the first eight months of this year, Prius sales totaled 31,406 units, a Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. spokesman said. The 2005 allocation is equal to the total number of Prius cars sold in the United States since it was introduced to the market in June 2000.

The greater supply for the U.S. market is possible because Toyota Motor Corp. is boosting Prius production by 50 percent to 15,000 units per month in Japan. The extra production will come from an existing Toyota assembly plant in Japan, but the automaker has not disclosed which plant it will use.

In addition to a greater allocation of Prius sedans, Toyota will introduce hybrid powertrain versions of the Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX330 (RX400h) sport wagons to the U.S. market early next year.

Booya grandma! Booya!
thats also for 2004. i said last year meaning 2003. and they are also counting sold as who put them on order, which means 20 of us could order and pay for one but we wont have it for another 6 months. that is why people are on 6 month waiting lists right now for prius's. im sure if there were truly that many already manufactured that there wouldnt be a 6 month waiting period for a car thats already out now would there. there are people buying theirs today and they could possibly not receive it til june or july of next year, and thats for a 2005 prius that is already on the road. ordering and actually producing are 2 different things. you can order all the stuff you want but if its regulated at the production level and higher then your only going to put out so many each year
