Timing Belt Cheat Code
hey guys
thought id share about how i almost ruined my h22 yesterday, and how i "cheated honda".
as some of you know the timing belt and tensioner assembly on the h22a are quite complicated and sometimes a bitch to install with the hydraulic auto tensioner.
well i was adjusting my cam gears yesterday and the exhaust cam was stuck (those skunk2 gears are SUCH a bitch to adjust), so i was lightly tapping a 14mm box wrench on the Cam bolt when all of a sudden the whole exhaust cam jumped a tooth on the belt. Now im no big city lawyer, but this spells serious trouble. So i step back holding my face and now the race is on with 1 hour of daylight remaining and 30* temps approaching. Me and my friend start brainstorming and we come up with this plan:
Use 1 of my stock cam gears to shimmi the belt onto, tap the exhaust cam 1 tooth retarded and then shimmi the belt back onto the skunk2 exhaust cam gear.
so we measure the vertical distance between the motor mount bracket and the bottom of the cam gear, then we cut a small block of wood to match. Now we rest the stock cam gear on top of the wood with some minor adjustments and line up the two gears' teeth and begin the shimmi process.
After about 30 minutes of slow shimi'in we had the belt on the other gear, rotated the exhaust cam back and then another 30 mins of slow but steady shimmi'in back to the skunk2 gear.
Car hits 8000 no problem, no timing belt "flap" at idle and we made sure not to use any metal tools to shimmi so we didnt nick the belt at all.
HONDA SAYS IT CANT BE DONE WITHOUT REMOVING THE T-BELT
BULLSHIT
