Default I'm worried! (Fueling experience.)

I was just filling up my gas tank just now, and it was chilly, so I was waiting inside of the car (CR-V) until it finished. When I got back out and it had finished, to my surprise, the thing was overflowing out of the tank!

I talked to the cash register lady and she said there's nothing she could do, so we had to pay the extra bit too.

I mean, it was their equipment that malfunctioned, so shouldn't they compensate in some way?

What could have caused it to do that anyway?

And should I worry about the gasoline on the paint of the car? Quite a bit did get on to it.
