Sure you can always go without it, if you're careful. All I'm saying is that once you get the flu, with asthma the situation deteriorates much more rapidly than in a non-asthmatic. One time I had flu I ended up in the hospital with pneumonia, another time I ended up with bronchitis, and I'm non-asthmatic. The whole point of the vaccine is to avoid that situation.

As for getting sick...I have actually never known of anyone who has gotten sick because of it, although I'm sure some people do. I think the likelihood of a reaction is small, but I don't really know.
