If you're going to be upgrading the engine the ONLY drawbacks to getting a GSR engine instead of a Type R are: Intake manifold, and transmission. The GSR comes with a dual stage intake manifold which is almost universally thrown out the window by modders. The R comes with limited slip in the trans, as well as a tweaked final drive.


But seriously, if you're going to rebuild the engines at all, all the advantages of a R vanish. The R's cams make more power, but a piddly amount more... either way you'll replace them. Pistons have a higher dome, but not enough for aggressive cams. Rods slightly stronger, but not strong enough.

The fact of the matter is that the R engine, while a trick little number, is still just a tweaked street machine. If you're going for power it'll need just as much modification as the rest of the VTEC engines.
