Now, I'm not completely sure on the Arkinsaw pronunciation, but I believe the word actually has an indian root, as there were originally 3 or 4 prominant indian tribes in Arkansas. The pronunciation has stayed the same, although the spelling has undergone multiple changes. If memory serves me correctly, at some point in the 1800s it was spelled Arkansaw.
