you can always buy a phone whenever you want. the only thing is, if you don't qualify for an upgrade, the phones are fawkin' expensive. you're probably looking at anywhere from 150 to almost 300 bucks for a simple phone. if you can somehow convince them to put a credit on your account, i suggest stopping by at your nearest RadioShack and picking up a Samsung A650. it's a simple flip phone and has great voice and signal quality. it's currently going for about $220 bucks w/o contract. avoid the motorola t720/730 (craptacular phone. i've lost faith in motorola), Audiovox 8600 and 8900 (software issues), LG VX3100 (crap ass signal), and Kyocera SE-47 Slider (sliders tend to break easily).

another thing that might help, have the RadioShack associate call up verizon and see if THEY can convince verizon to add the credit onto your account. if that doesn't work, they do have a verizon rep they can get a hold of and do that sort of stuff for you.
