I think they do more than you believe...though the difference is more significant in the rear vs. the front IMO. Body rigidity (esp. on 5th gens) is pretty good, but because the rear has a bit of open space, some bracing couldn't hurt. If you do break down and get one, don't just get some cheapo $50 strut bar. It would defeat the purpose if there's flexing when pushed.
