another really good mod for this beast is to pipe together yourself an exhaust system. Depending on the noise level that you are comfortable with buy a muffler, and have a shop weld and bend some pipes to make it fit. 2" - 2.25" piping does wonders.

and also if fabricate yourself a custom air intake (using dryer duct hoses) and a K&N cone filter you will really benifit from much better throttle responce.

If you are really into hiway driving (speeds of 110 km/h +) i would highy recomend you hybrid your tranny, by swaping your 5th gear for a 5th gear outta a later model d series civic (like d16y8). the short gears of a G1 are fun, but at hiway speeds the car tends to rev a lil too high for my taste.

-as for possible problems, (all side mounted distributor honda's suffer this), the bearings can take a dump, that can cause the main shaft to seize causeing your timing to trip (can cause internal engine damage) look on the inside of your distributor for a brown/reddy dust. also since the coil is mounted inside your distributor they tend to die as well. ive seen both these problems occur to vehicles anywhere between 160k-260k km's. if you do alot of urban driving, Id suggest picking up a used one and keeping it in your trunk. its really easy to change on the side of a road!!

- I am a G3 owner, but it all started off with a G1, then a g2, and now currently I have 2 G3's
