Yes you are supposed to remove the axle and intermediate shaft. I have done it, it's not that hard. Jack up only the front left side of the car, that way you won't have to drain the transmission when you pull the intermediate shaft out of the differential. You will probably need someone to help hold the spindle while you remove the axle, and then again when you go to put the axle back in.
