Having a bung in there would just make the whole thing more secure against vibration. Depending on the size and weight of the probe, it may be a non-issue. Personally, I would probably fabricate or buy a bung the size I was looking for just so I had the piece of mind that it would be more than strong enough to hold up to street use, but I admittedly can get overly paranoid about street survivability.
