about the fluctuating idle. i have seen many times when a small screw on the end of the plunger inside the IACV would back it's self out, causing exactly what you described. happened twice to me.

and about the rings. when you put the new ones in, hone the cylinder walls, so they seat correctly. and replace all the rubber gaskets that you possibly can.
