I have seen a picture series of a few guys lifting out a D-series engine with no lift, but they used a lift to put the new B-series in. Remember, these engine/trans combos weigh a few hundred pounds and they're basically sitting in a steel bathtub. It's fun enough to get out with a lift, I can't imagine pulling and installing without an lift.

If you have all the parts you need, it can easily get done in a weekend.
