The reason why I would rather remove the paint as opposed to painting it black it because that is a high wear and tear area. Throwing stuff in that pocket might end up chipping the black paint.

For the gauge bezel, you're probably better off getting a new one at the wrecking yard. Pull out the old piece and put in the new one. That simple.
