You can get an FMU setup to work reasonably well and as long as your injectors respond to changes in fuel pressure in a reasonably proportional manner it's a workable solution.

It's not going to be optimized and it's not going to make the most power that it can, but no, it probably won't blow up. No guarantees, of course. If that's all you're really aiming for then ok.
