Regular gas doesn't like the compression that our engine puts it through, and can cause detonation. And while our engines have a knock sensor to detect ping and retard the timing, since detonation = very bad, I'm not going to willfully expose my engine to it.
Here, in town, there's like a 10 cent difference between 89 and 91... and I'd rather spend the money and get the stuff my engine's supposed to use, but on a budget, I would entertain the idea of 89. I wouldn't use 87 unless I had no other choice...
