Sounds more to me like you either dropped a rod cap, broke a rod bolt, or broke a rod because if you had timing related problems, you wouldn't have oil all over your engine bay. A head gasket wouldn't make the mess you described, either. If I were you, I'd get a flashlight and check the block for holes.
