There aren't "generations" to GSR engines per say, just OBD-1 or OBD-2. 94-96 is OBD-1 and 97~01 is OBD-2. Since you're swapping it into a vehical with OBD-0 electronics it doesn't really matter which year you get. Aside from the mounting and fitment issues, you are also going to have to either
A) Leave the car OBD-0 and run a B16 ecu (pw0/pr3), with some tuning on the fuel, perhaps a custom chip and some electronic or relay magic to activate the GS-R intake manifolds IAB's(intake butterflys).
B) Convert the CRX to OBD-1(easier than OBD-2) and run the appropriate ECU, being a p72 or a chipped p28.
Either way you've got some wiring situations to deal with to do you swap.

Peep this you're gonna have hood clearnace issues with that engine You can eaither buy a ZC style hood or you can shim it down, but then you'll be risking dragging the oil pan. Everyone has the pipe dream when they start out to swap in a big ole VTEC engine and throw a S/C or Turbo on there right afterwards. Most don't realize the difficulties that come with all that. Either way you you're gonna have lots of fitment issues
If you use a roots style S/C(JRSC), you will have ZERO clearance at the firewall and to be honest you'll prolly have to dent the firewall in to keep the S/C from banging on upshift/downshifts/generall engine torquing. If you're thinking of going with the centrifugal style S/C(Vortec), you can just hang that up right now. There isn't enough room to hang power streering off the front of a b-series swap ina CRX, let alone a GSR, and the Vortec kits take up a crap load of room on either side. You'll end up most likely having to mod the head light buckets for cleanace. Granted it could be done in either case, it would just take lots of creative engineering and some $$$.
If you decide to do the Turbocharger thing, then good for you, but there is a whole big can of worms too. Been there an done that. A GS-R engine stands taller and more forward than the other B-series swaps. You gotta hang a big ole turbo and manifold off the front of your engine, route the exhaust and intercooler piping past the very restictive from crossmember. When I say restrictive a mean that moderate N/A headers won't clear the x-member with b-series swaps. The JDM SiR CRX/Civics had a factory x-member that was designed differently to allow the proper cleanrace. The US versions never having B-series engien factory, didn't get this.(unesless tidbit of info)
With either i'm not evening gonna talk mention fueling, suspension, proper tuning ect, becuase thats a whiole different essay. And Honesty It doesn't take that much power to propel a CRX down the track. Nothing against a GSR engine, but i've seen B16 w/ bolt-ons and slicks rip 13 second 1/4 mile times, I've seen a cobbled together B20/vtec(b16 head/b20 block) with some bolt-ons run a 12.6 on slicks. So You may not wanna dismiss the idea of running an LS or B20 just yet. Personally i'm an LS man just because they are much easier and cheaper to get parts for than VTEC engines, they also came in an OBD-0 flavor so the wiring can be very simple with the right parts. Both LS and B20 can be converted to VTEC if thats your thing. It's all just how smart you want to do it, and how many times you wanna go through different setups before you find something that reliable and that works.
Cheap, Fast, or Reliable. Pick two.
